Salmon vs Trout
Verdict: Salmon typically migrate between river and ocean, while most trout stay in fresh water, but steelhead trout also go to sea. The label name is often the surest clue, because the two groups are closely related and blur.
Salmon and trout belong to the same fish family, Salmonidae, and both groups include several genera, so the line between them is blurry. In general, salmon live part of life in the ocean and return to rivers to spawn, while trout are mostly freshwater fish. Steelhead are sea-run rainbow trout, which complicates the rule.
Naming does not follow strict relatedness either. Pacific salmon are more closely related to Pacific trout than to Atlantic salmon. The practical result is that the fish name on a label, a stream or a license is often more useful than any single body trait. Spawning is one real contrast, because Pacific salmon die after spawning.
Salmon vs Trout side by side
| Trait | Salmon | Trout |
|---|---|---|
| Family | Salmonidae | Salmonidae |
| Typical water | Anadromous: hatch in fresh water, mature at sea, return to spawn | Mostly freshwater for life, some sea-run forms like steelhead |
| After spawning | All Pacific salmon die within days or weeks, Atlantic salmon may spawn again | Steelhead and other trout can spawn several years in a row |
| Genera | Salmo (Atlantic) and Oncorhynchus (Pacific) | Three main genera, including Salmo and Oncorhynchus |
| Flesh and coloring | Flesh orange to red from carotenoid pigment, some white | Oily fish, body coloring varies with habitat (vivid in streams, silvery at sea) |
| Size | Atlantic and Chinook up to about 150 cm, pink up to about 76 cm | Rainbow trout lives about 7 years, lake trout can top 30 kg (66 lb) |
| Fins | Adipose fin near the tail, no spiny fins | Adipose fin near the tail, no spiny fins |
| Naming | Atlantic salmon is not close kin to Pacific salmon | Common names do not track evolutionary relationships |

When you are looking at which
Salmon
- The label or license says Chinook, sockeye, coho, pink, chum or Atlantic salmon.
- The fish was caught on its way up a river from the ocean, with spawning colors.
- It is a large fish, near 100 cm or more, with deep orange to red flesh.
- A Pacific fish dying soon after spawning in a stream points to salmon.
Trout
- The label or license says rainbow, lake, brook or brown trout.
- It lives in a stream, pond or lake and never goes to sea.
- The sea-run form is called steelhead, which is a trout.
- It is a lake fish living for decades, which is typical of lake trout.
How this works
The quiz asks about label name, water, spawning, flesh color and size. Each answer favors the fish most associated with that cue, and the note under each question names both so you can see the reasoning, including which cues are weaker or overlap.
These fish blur together, so the quiz leans on the label name and the life cycle, and it flags spawning look, water and size as weaker cues that overlap between the two groups. For a firm identification, use your state fish and wildlife agency's species guide or ask a licensed fishing guide, who can check the fish in hand.

Frequently asked questions
Is salmon a type of trout?
No, but they are close relatives in the family Salmonidae. Pacific salmon are more closely related to Pacific trout than to Atlantic salmon, so the common names are not clean scientific divisions.
Is steelhead a salmon or a trout?
A trout. Steelhead are the sea-run form of rainbow trout and follow a salmon-like life, living up to three years at sea before returning to fresh water to spawn.
Do all salmon die after spawning?
All Pacific salmon die within days or weeks of spawning. Atlantic salmon sometimes survive and spawn again, though post-spawning death is still common.
Why is salmon flesh orange or red?
Carotenoid pigments, mainly astaxanthin, obtained from a diet of krill and shellfish give salmon flesh its color. White-fleshed varieties exist.
