Shark vs Dolphin
Verdict: Check the tail and the breathing. A dolphin is a mammal with a horizontal tail and a blowhole on top of the head. A shark is a fish with a vertical tail and gill slits on the sides.
Sharks and dolphins look alike at a glance: both are streamlined, gray, and have a dorsal fin. The similarity comes from living in the same water, not from relatedness. Sharks are cartilaginous fish. Dolphins are warm-blooded mammals that breathe air, bear live young and feed them milk.
Several quick clues separate them. A shark swings its vertical tail side to side, while a dolphin's horizontal flukes move up and down. A dolphin surfaces to exhale through its blowhole, while a shark pulls oxygen from water through gills. Sizes overlap, so they are not a reliable guide.
Shark vs Dolphin side by side
| Trait | Shark | Dolphin |
|---|---|---|
| Animal group | Cartilaginous fish | Mammal |
| Breathing | Gills, usually five to seven slits on each side | Lungs, breathes air through a blowhole on top of the head |
| Tail | Vertical tail fin, upper lobe often larger | Horizontal tail flukes |
| Skeleton | Cartilage, no ribs | Bone, with ribs |
| Young | Eggs, live birth, or eggs hatching inside, no milk | Live birth and the young nurse on milk |
| Skin and hair | Dermal denticles, tiny tooth-like scales | No scales, a tiny amount of hair near the blowhole |
| Teeth | Replaceable, shape varies by diet: pointed, razor-sharp or flat | Conical teeth that grip fish, swallowed whole head first |
| Size range | About 17 cm (7 in) dwarf lanternshark to 18.8 m (62 ft) whale shark | About 1.7 m (5.6 ft) Maui's dolphin to 9.5 m (31 ft) orca |

When you are looking at which
Shark
- The tail fin is vertical and the animal swims by sweeping it side to side.
- You can see a row of gill slits along each side behind the head.
- A washed-up carcass has a flexible cartilage skeleton and no ribs.
- An egg case called a mermaid's purse is found on the beach.
Dolphin
- You see a rounded forehead and the animal surfaces to blow from the top of its head.
- The tail flukes are horizontal and move up and down while it swims.
- A calf swims beside an adult and nurses on milk.
- You see a pod of animals that change in size and makeup over time.
How this works
The quiz asks about tail direction, breathing, skeleton, young and body temperature. Each answer favors the animal most associated with that cue, and the note under each question names both so you can see the reasoning, including which cues are weaker or overlap.
Some features are hard to see in the wild, and sharks can surface, so breathing and skeleton are best used with a clear view. Photos, video and expert help from a marine biologist or your state wildlife agency are the surest way to confirm an animal.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- NOAA National Ocean Service: Are dolphins fish?, Dolphins are mammals that breathe air, nurse young and are warm-blooded. (checked October 2026)
- Smithsonian Ocean: Sharks, Shark cartilage skeleton, gills, vertical tails, teeth and reproduction. (checked October 2026)
- Wikipedia: Dolphin, Dolphin horizontal flukes, blowhole, size range and pods. (checked October 2026)

Frequently asked questions
Is a dolphin a fish or a mammal?
A mammal. NOAA states that dolphins breathe air with lungs, are warm-blooded, give birth to live young and feed them milk. They even have a little hair near the blowhole.
How can you tell a shark from a dolphin at the surface?
Look at the tail and the way it moves. A vertical tail swinging side to side is a shark and horizontal flukes moving up and down is a dolphin, which also exhales through a blowhole.
Do sharks have bones?
No. Their skeleton is made of cartilage, the same flexible material as human noses and ears, and they have no ribs.
Can sharks and dolphins be the same size?
Yes, sizes overlap. Sharks range from about 17 cm to 18.8 m and dolphins from about 1.7 m to 9.5 m, so use tail and breathing clues rather than length.
