Lion vs Leopard
Verdict: The fastest tell is the coat: an adult lion is plain tawny with no spots, while a leopard is covered in rosettes. Males of the two differ too, since only the lion has a mane. Lions also live in groups.
Lions and leopards both live in Africa, and both are big cats, so they often get confused in photos and stories. They differ a lot in size and behavior. Lions live in prides. Leopards are the smallest of the large cats and are mostly solitary, nocturnal and strong climbers.
Coat is the clearest cue. Adult lions are a plain buff, silvery gray, yellowish red or dark brown, with a dark tuft on the tail tip, though cubs have faint spots. Leopards have dark spots grouped in rosettes and a white-undersided tail. Range overlaps in Africa, but only leopards also live widely in Asia.

How this works
The quiz asks about coat, mane, group size, tail and behavior. Each answer favors the cat most associated with that cue, and the note under each question names both so you can see the reasoning, including which cues are weaker or overlap.
Young lions have spots and some leopards are melanistic, so coat alone can mislead. Use two or more cues together, and ask a ranger, guide or wildlife agency if you need a firm identification. Do not approach wild big cats.

Frequently asked questions
Which is bigger, a lion or a leopard?
A lion. Male lions weigh about 330 to 570 pounds, while male leopards weigh about 80 to 165 pounds, and leopards are the smallest of the large cats.
Do adult lions have spots?
No. Lion cubs are born with dark rosette markings that fade as they grow, and faint spots may remain on the legs and underparts. Adult leopards keep their rosettes for life.
Can lions and leopards live in the same place?
Yes, in parts of Africa. Lions can cause significant leopard mortality, and leopards keep out of reach by hauling prey into trees and by hunting at night.
Is a black panther a lion or leopard?
A black panther is a leopard with melanism, a dark coat caused by a recessive gene.
