Llama vs Alpaca
Verdict: Look at the ears and size first: llamas are bigger with long, banana-shaped ears, while alpacas are smaller with short, spear-shaped ears and a blunt face.
Llamas and alpacas are close South American camelid relatives and are often mistaken for each other at fairs and farms. Both are domesticated, both have long necks and soft feet, and both come in many colors. The differences are in size, head shape and the job each was bred to do.
Alpacas were bred mainly for fiber, which is why their fleece is finer and denser. Llamas were bred as pack animals and meat animals, and today many are used to guard other livestock. Judging by size alone can mislead with a young llama or a large alpaca, so use several cues together.

When you are looking at which
Llama
- The animal is tall, with a shoulder near your chest and a long narrow face.
- Its ears are long and curve inward like bananas.
- It stands calmly alone in a pasture with sheep or goats, watching the fence line.
- Its coat looks coarse on the outside with a softer layer underneath.
Alpaca
- The animal is small, about the size of a large dog at the shoulder.
- Its ears are short, straight and spear-like rather than long and curved.
- Its face looks flat and blunt, and it stays tight with other alpacas.
- Its fleece looks dense, crimped and fluffy, or hangs in long silky locks.
How this works
This page lines up the two species on size, ears, face, fiber, temperament and use, drawing on encyclopedia and farm-press descriptions. The quiz asks about five things you can see or observe from the other side of a fence, without handling the animal, and explains each one.
Young llamas and large alpacas can overlap in size, and shearing hides fleece differences. Cross-breeds exist too, so a mixed animal may give mixed answers. Ear shape is the strongest single cue, and size is the weakest on its own, so treat a split result as a prompt to look again.

- Wikipedia: Alpaca, Alpaca size, lifespan, huacaya and suri fiber, and shearing yield (checked October 2026)

Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest way to tell a llama from an alpaca?
Check the ears and the size. Llama ears are long and banana-shaped, and the animal is noticeably taller. Alpaca ears are short and pointed, and the face looks blunt.
Are llamas or alpacas bigger?
Llamas are bigger. Typical llamas stand about 42 to 46 inches at the shoulder and weigh up to around 400 pounds, while alpacas are about 34 to 36 inches and roughly 106 to 198 pounds.
Which one gives better fiber?
Alpacas. Their fleece is finer and denser and comes in more natural colors, and annual shearing yields roughly 5 to 10 pounds per animal. Llama fiber has a fine undercoat but coarser guard hair, so it is more often used for rugs and ropes.
Which makes a better guard animal?
Llamas. They have been used as livestock guardians in North America since the early 1980s and tend to be more independent. Alpacas are herd-oriented and more nervous, so they are not usually chosen for guarding.
