About VersusCalcs
VersusCalcs is a free set of 163 side-by-side comparisons, each with a clear verdict first and then a calculator or quiz so the answer fits your situation: animals, auto, home, kitchen and yard, plus time-zone pages and finders.
Who runs this site
VersusCalcs is run by Chris Jensen, an independent individual based in Florida. It is not a company. I started it because information people were looking for was missing or hard to find, and I wanted everyday comparisons in simple tools that show their method. Where the site says “we”, that is me. You can reach me at rusticreckoner@gmail.com or through the contact page.
Why this site exists
Two things that look alike are rarely worth the same decision. The question is usually which one fits your situation, and a plain verdict plus a short calculation answers it faster than a long article. VersusCalcs gives the verdict first, shows the facts behind it and then lets you plug in your own numbers.
What you will find here
There are 163 comparisons in five groups, plus time-zone pages, one language page and finders:
- Animals: 105 pairs of animals that are commonly confused, from crow and raven to anaconda and python, with how to tell them apart
- Auto: 9 vehicle and fuel comparisons
- Home: 22 comparisons of materials and household choices
- Kitchen: 12 cooking and food comparisons
- Yard: 15 comparisons of plants, trees and lawn choices
- Time Zones: 21 pages on the hour difference between places
- Language: a page on easily confused words
- Finders: short quizzes that help you choose between options
Where the numbers come from
Each page links its sources. Animal comparisons draw on reference works such as Cornell Lab’s All About Birds, the San Diego Zoo, the University of Michigan’s Animal Diversity Web, VCA animal hospitals, the National Park Service and the United Kennel Club, with Wikipedia and Britannica for general background. Home, kitchen and yard pages use sources such as ENERGY STAR, the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory, university extension services, NOAA Fisheries, the U.S. Energy Information Administration and FoodSafety.gov. Vehicle pages use fueleconomy.gov and the Alternative Fuels Data Center, and time-zone pages use NIST and the IANA time zone database. Pages show when a source was last checked. The how we calculate page explains our approach and its limits.
