Turtle vs Tortoise
Verdict: Look at the feet and the shell. Tortoises have stumpy, round, elephant-like feet and a domed shell and live on land, while most turtles have webbed feet or flippers and a flatter shell for swimming.
Every tortoise is a turtle, but not every turtle is a tortoise. Turtle is the umbrella word for the whole group, and tortoise is the land-living branch. So the useful question is whether a shelled reptile is built for water or for dry ground, which its feet answer quickly.
Shell shape helps but is not perfect, because box turtles also have domed shells. Habitat is the next clue. Tortoises walk on land, dig burrows and mostly eat plants, while aquatic turtles swim and often eat fish, snails and worms. If you find a hatchling, check the feet before moving it toward water.
Turtle vs Tortoise side by side
| Trait | Turtle | Tortoise |
|---|---|---|
| Classification | The umbrella group, about 200 species | A land-living subgroup of turtles |
| Feet | Webbed feet for swimming, or flippers on sea turtles | Round, stumpy, elephant-like feet for walking |
| Claws | Sharper, used in swimming | Flat claws suited to digging |
| Shell | Often flatter and streamlined | Typically high and domed (box turtles are a domed exception) |
| Habitat | Water or near it, from ponds and rivers to oceans | Strictly land; many dig burrows |
| Diet | Omnivores; aquatic turtles eat fish, snails, worms and plants | Mostly plant eaters such as grasses, shrubs, flowers and cactus |
| Typical lifespan | Roughly 40 to 70 years | Desert tortoises 60 to 80 years; large species 100 years or more |
| Water needs | Lives in or near water | A desert tortoise can survive over a year without access to water |

When you are looking at which
Turtle
- The animal has webbed feet or flippers, or you found it in a pond, river or sea.
- The shell is flatter or smooth and streamlined.
- It is eating fish, snails, worms or insects as well as plants.
- It basks on a log or slides into water when you approach.
Tortoise
- The feet are round and stumpy with no webbing, like small elephant feet.
- The shell is tall and domed and the animal is walking on dry ground.
- You see a burrow dug in dry soil that it uses for shelter.
- It is eating grass, flowers or cactus pads.
How this works
The quiz uses feet, shell height, location, food and claws. Each answer points to turtle or tortoise, and the side with more answers wins. Feet and habitat are the strongest cues, and a close score is reported as too close to call.
Shell shape and diet overlap, since box turtles are domed and some turtles eat mainly plants. Terrapins and semi-aquatic species sit in the middle, and sea turtles have flippers. For a pet or an injured animal, ask a vet or your state wildlife agency for a species ID.

The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- Museum of Science: What's the Difference Between a Turtle and a Tortoise?, supports shell, feet, claws, habitat and lifespan differences (checked October 2026)
- San Diego Zoo: Turtle and Tortoise, supports feet, habitat, diet and lifespan ranges (checked October 2026)

- National Park Service: Desert Tortoise, Lake Mead, supports desert tortoise lifespan and water-loss rate (checked October 2026)
Field-identification guide. Many turtles and tortoises are protected, so leave wild animals where you find them.
Frequently asked questions
Is a tortoise a turtle?
Yes. Tortoises are a subgroup of turtles that live on land. Museum of Science and National Geographic both note that all tortoises are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises.
Which lives longer, a turtle or a tortoise?
Tortoises usually do. The Fish and Wildlife Service cites turtles at around 40 years in the wild, while tortoises often pass 100. The NPS says desert tortoises live about 60 to 80 years.
Can tortoises swim?
They lack water adaptations and are not built for swimming. National Geographic notes tortoise hatchlings were once mistakenly released into the ocean, where they would drown, so check the feet before helping an animal.
What should I do if I find a wild turtle or tortoise?
Leave it undisturbed unless it is in danger. If it needs help, contact your state fish and wildlife agency. Do not move a tortoise to water or take a wild animal home.
