Granite vs Marble
Verdict: Pick granite for a busy kitchen because it tolerates kitchen acids and rarely needs sealing. Pick marble for its look and accept that lemon, vinegar and similar acids can dull or etch the surface.
Granite and marble are both natural stone, but they are different rock types. Granite is mostly quartz and feldspar and is classed as siliceous. Marble is recrystallized calcite or dolomite and is classed as calcareous. That difference explains most of how they behave on a countertop, especially around acids.
Appearance differs too. Granite looks speckled and grainy in white, pink, gray and darker tones, while marble is known for soft veining from mineral impurities. Neither is maintenance-free, so the real question is how much care you are willing to give for the look you want.
Granite vs Marble side by side
| Trait | Granite | Marble |
|---|---|---|
| Rock family | Siliceous (quartz and feldspar) | Calcareous (calcite or dolomite) |
| Acids (lemon, vinegar) | Generally resistant to kitchen acids | Can dull or etch, avoid acidic products |
| Sealing | Most granite countertops do not need sealing | Sealer is a common precaution, it reduces staining only |
| Scratch and wear | One of the hardest dimension stones | Polishes beautifully but is described as softer and easier to scratch |
| Water absorption | About 0.05 to 0.40% by weight | Described as porous, stains from colored liquids |
| Heat | Resists heat to about 480 F (250 C) | No rating in our sources, so use trivets as a precaution |
| Look | Speckled, granular, white, pink, gray or dark | Veined from mineral impurities, polished or honed |
| Cleaning | pH-neutral cleaner, stone soap or mild dish soap | Same neutral cleaners, and wipe up acids quickly |

Which one fits you
Granite
- You cook often with tomatoes, citrus, wine or vinegar and want fewer worries about marks.
- You want a countertop that needs little sealing and holds up to everyday use.
- You like a speckled or granular natural look in a busy family kitchen.
- You want a surface that tolerates warm pots better than most, with sensible care.
Marble
- You love soft veining and a classic look and accept a surface that develops patina.
- You will wipe acids up quickly and use neutral cleaners without fuss.
- The surface is for baking, a bathroom vanity or a low-use island rather than heavy cooking.
- You are fine with some care, such as sealing and trivets, to keep the look.
How this works
The quiz asks about acid exposure, upkeep, look, use and tolerance for patina. Each answer favors the stone whose properties suit that situation, and the note under each question explains the trade-off behind it in plain terms. Results say which stone fits better, not which is best overall.
Individual slabs vary. Granite can be factory resin-treated, marble comes in many types, and finish matters, so ask your supplier for the stone's water absorption data and care instructions before you buy anything. A small sample at home shows how it handles your own cleaning products.

Frequently asked questions
Does granite need to be sealed?
The Natural Stone Institute says most granite countertops do not need sealing and that no food-safety problems have been tied to treated or untreated granite. Sealing is optional and only adds stain resistance.
Will lemon juice damage marble?
It can. Lemon, vinegar and other acids may dull or etch calcareous stone like marble. Wipe spills quickly and clean with a neutral cleaner, stone soap or mild dish detergent.
Is granite harder than marble?
Granite is one of the hardest dimension stones and has strong scratch resistance. Marble is described as softer and easier to scratch and stain, though it polishes well.
Can I put hot pots on granite?
Granite resists heat to about 480 F (250 C), so brief contact with a warm pot is generally fine. A trivet is still a sensible habit, and your fabricator can advise on your specific slab.
