Camel vs Dromedary
Verdict: A dromedary is a camel, specifically the one-humped kind. When people contrast the two, they usually mean the two-humped Bactrian camel versus the one-humped dromedary, so count the humps.
The word camel covers two living domestic species: the dromedary, or Arabian camel, with one hump, and the Bactrian camel with two. So the comparison is really dromedary versus Bactrian. Many people say camel for either, which is why searches get confusing. A third species, the wild Bactrian, also exists but is very rare.
Beyond humps, the two differ in build, coat and home. The Bactrian is stockier with a long wooly coat and lives on the cold Central Asian steppe and Gobi Desert. The dromedary is taller and leaner with short hair and lives in the hot deserts of North Africa and the Middle East.

How this works
The quiz asks about humps, height, coat, location and build. Each answer favors the camel type most associated with that cue, and the note under each question names both so you can see the reasoning, including which cues are weaker or overlap.
Camel is a genus name and everyday word, not a species. This page uses Bactrian for the two-humped species and dromedary for the one-humped one. Hybrids exist, so a camel with an odd hump shape may not fit either group neatly.

Frequently asked questions
Is a dromedary a camel?
Yes. A dromedary is one of the two domestic camel species. When people compare camel and dromedary they usually mean the two-humped Bactrian camel versus the one-humped dromedary.
Which has one hump and which has two?
The dromedary has one hump and the Bactrian camel has two. Both humps are fat stores, not water tanks, and they shrink when the animal is short of food.
Can a dromedary and a Bactrian camel breed?
Yes, they can interbreed and the offspring are fertile, but genetic analysis shows about 10.3% divergence in one gene sequence, which supports treating them as separate species.
Where do camels live?
Dromedaries live in arid North Africa, Ethiopia, the Near East and western and central Asia, plus feral herds in Australia. Bactrian camels live on the steppes and deserts of Central Asia, mainly the Gobi.
