Leopard vs Jaguar

Verdict: Check where the cat lives and what is inside its rosettes. Jaguars live in the Americas and have spots inside their rosettes, while leopards live in Africa and Asia and their rosettes have no center dot. Jaguars are also stockier.

Tell-apart quiz

These two spotted cats look alike at a glance, but they live on different continents. Leopards range across Africa and Asia. Jaguars live in the Americas, from Mexico through Central and South America. If you know where a photo was taken, that alone settles most cases, apart from zoo animals, which can live far from home.

Coat and build confirm it. A jaguar's rosettes are blocky and often hold a small spot in the middle, which Panthera's Howard Quigley sums up as spots in the middle of their spots. A leopard's are smaller and lack that dot. Jaguars are heavier, with blockier heads, while leopards are leaner with longer tails.

When you are looking at which

Leopard

  • The photo or sighting is in Africa or Asia, such as a savanna or Indian forest.
  • The rosettes are small and empty in the center.
  • The cat looks lean with a long tail and a lighter head.
  • You see a kill hoisted into a tree.

Jaguar

  • The sighting is in Mexico, Central or South America, such as the Pantanal or Amazon.
  • The rosettes are large, blocky, and have a spot inside.
  • The cat is thickset with a broad, blocky head.
  • It is swimming, hunting near a river or taking prey like capybara or caiman.

How this works

The quiz weighs five clues: continent, rosette pattern, build, habits and prey. Each answer points to one cat, and the side with more answers wins. A close score is reported as too close to call, and that is your cue to check the rosettes.

Range and rosettes are the most reliable cues. Habits and prey are tendencies, since both cats climb and swim. Black individuals hide rosettes, and zoo animals live outside their natural range, so a zoo photo cannot rely on the continent clue.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest way to tell a jaguar from a leopard?

Look at the rosettes. Jaguar rosettes are bigger and often contain small spots, while leopard rosettes are smaller and have no central dot. Range also separates them, since the two live on different continents.

Are black panthers leopards or jaguars?

Both. Panthera says either species can be melanistic. Black leopards are more common in tropical Asia and African montane forests, and black jaguars are rarer and found mostly in lowland tropical forests.

Which is bigger, a leopard or a jaguar?

Jaguars are generally larger and sturdier. San Diego Zoo lists jaguars at 70 to 249 pounds and leopards at roughly 46 to 165 pounds, depending on sex.

Do leopards and jaguars live in the same places?

No. Wild leopards live in Africa and Asia, and wild jaguars live in the Americas, so they do not overlap naturally.
