Hornet vs Yellow Jacket
Verdict: Size and nest are the best clues. A wasp over an inch long with a nest in a hollow or hanging in the open is a hornet. A small, lean wasp coming out of a hole in the ground is a yellow jacket.
In the United States the only true hornet is the European hornet, at about 1 to 1.5 inches long. The bald-faced hornet is the one people usually mean, and it is technically a yellow jacket with a black and white face. So the two names overlap, and this page treats both as hornets.
Yellow jackets are smaller, usually 1/2 to 3/4 inch, and many nest in the ground or in wall voids. Hornets build above ground. Both can sting more than once, and both defend the nest hard, so the safest move for either is distance and a pest professional.
Hornet vs Yellow Jacket side by side

When you are looking at which
Hornet
- A wasp well over an inch long, brown or reddish, bumping a window or porch light at night.
- A big gray, football-shaped paper nest hanging in the open from a tree branch or eave.
- A black and white striped wasp rather than yellow, which points to a bald-faced hornet.
- A nest in a hollow tree, old barn, or outbuilding wall.
Yellow Jacket
- A small, lean wasp under about 3/4 inch long, with bright yellow and black bands.
- Wasps streaming in and out of a small hole in the lawn or a stump.
- Wasps swarming your soda, burgers, or trash cans in late summer.
- Sudden mass stinging after mowing or stepping near an unseen nest.
How this works
The quiz asks about size, nest, color, food interest and colony activity, then adds up which species each answer favors. Answers you mark as unsure are skipped, so you can answer only the cues you can see safely. Because yellow jackets and European hornets can look similar in flight, we weight nest location and size more than color.
Hornet and yellow jacket names overlap in everyday use, and color varies by species and caste. The result is a best guess for planning, not a species ID. A local extension office can confirm a specimen. Keep well back from any nest while you look, and treat a nest inside a wall or the ground as a job for professionals.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- Cornell IPM: European Hornet, European hornet size, color, nest sites and night activity (checked October 2026)
- Cornell IPM: Yellowjackets and Baldfaced Hornets, Yellow jacket sizes, nest places, colony sizes and scavenging (checked October 2026)
- University of Maryland Extension: Social Wasps, Nest types and sizes for yellow jackets and hornets (checked October 2026)
- University of Georgia: Hornets and Yellow Jackets, Above-ground vs ground nests and seasonal behavior (checked October 2026)
Field-identification guide. Do not approach or disturb a nest, and use a licensed pest professional for removal.
Frequently asked questions
Is a hornet just a big yellow jacket?
Not exactly. The European hornet is a true hornet and larger than any yellow jacket in the U.S. The bald-faced hornet, however, is classed as a yellow jacket despite its name.
Which stings worse, a hornet or a yellow jacket?
Both can sting repeatedly and both defend their nests. Yellow jackets are the more common cause of stings because their ground nests are easy to disturb by accident, such as when mowing.
Do hornets and yellow jackets reuse their nests?
No. The colonies die off each winter and the old nest is not reused, so a nest removed in fall will not be reoccupied next spring.
Why are wasps at my porch light at night?
European hornets forage at night and are drawn to lights. Yellow jackets are mostly day fliers, though they can also be attracted to light.
