Cotton vs Polyester
Verdict: Choose cotton for absorbency and breathable everyday comfort, and polyester for wrinkle resistance, quick drying and abrasion resistance. Polyester is more heat sensitive, and blends of the two are common.
Cotton is a plant fiber that is strong and absorbent. Polyester is a synthetic that takes up very little moisture. Textile extension guidance describes cotton as poor in wrinkle resistance and prone to shrinking, and polyester as extremely wrinkle resistant, quick drying and resistant to abrasion and mildew.
Real garments are rarely so clear-cut, because many fabrics blend the two to get some of each. Weave, knit and finish also change how a cloth feels. One lab study found polyester held more body oils and bacteria than cotton, which helps explain why synthetic sportswear can hold odor.
Cotton vs Polyester side by side
| Trait | Cotton | Polyester |
|---|---|---|
| Fiber type | Natural, plant-based | Synthetic, chemical-based |
| Absorbency | Strong and absorbent | Low moisture absorption |
| Water retained after drying (one lab test) | About 2.24 percent | About 0.23 percent |
| Wrinkling | Poor wrinkle resistance | Extremely wrinkle resistant |
| Drying | Slower, holds moisture | Dries quickly |
| Shrinkage | Prone to shrinking without treatment | Not described as prone to shrinking |
| Heat | Tolerates higher heat than polyester | Very heat sensitive, so use low heat |
| Mildew and abrasion | Susceptible to mildew and sun damage | Resists mildew and abrasion |
| Odor on worn fabric | Held less body oil and bacteria in a lab study | Held more body oil and bacteria in the same study |

Which one fits you
Cotton
- You want soft, breathable clothing or sheets for everyday wear and sleep
- You want a fabric that absorbs sweat and moisture
- You can tolerate some wrinkling and wash with care to limit shrinking
- You plan to iron or dry on warmer settings
Polyester
- You want clothes that stay smooth with little ironing, such as travel or work wear
- You need fast drying for sports, outdoor use or damp climates
- You want a fabric that resists abrasion and mildew
- You will wash and dry on low heat
How this works
The quiz maps your priorities, such as ironing, drying time, moisture and washing heat, to the fiber properties in extension and research sources. It treats pure cotton and pure polyester. It cannot judge a specific garment, brand or blend ratio, so treat the result as a guide to the fiber, not the finished fabric.
Many fabrics are blends, and weave, knit and finishes change how a cloth wears. Treat the result as a starting point and read the label and the fabric's description. Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:

Frequently asked questions
Is cotton or polyester more breathable?
Cotton is the more absorbent fiber and is the usual pick for breathable comfort. Polyester absorbs little moisture, but it dries quickly, which is why it is common in activewear.
Does polyester hold odor more than cotton?
One laboratory study found polyester held more bacteria and absorbed more sebum, the oil bacteria feed on, than cotton did. Results depend on the fabric and finish, but it fits the common experience of smelly synthetic shirts.
Does cotton shrink and polyester not?
Extension guidance says cotton is prone to shrinkage unless treated. Polyester is described as wrinkle resistant and quick drying, and the same guidance notes it is very heat sensitive, so avoid hot dryers.
Is a cotton-polyester blend a good compromise?
Often yes. Many modern fabrics blend both fibers to combine cotton's comfort with polyester's low-maintenance traits, though a blend gives up some of each fiber's strengths.
