Gorilla vs Orangutan

Verdict: Look at the hair and the place. An orangutan has long reddish hair and lives only in Borneo and Sumatra; a gorilla has dark black or gray hair and lives in African forests, often in family troops.

Which one fits you

Gorillas and orangutans are both great apes with no tail, so they are easy to mix up. They live on different continents and are not close neighbors. Gorillas are African and the largest living primates. Orangutans are the only great apes native to Asia, found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra.

Their lifestyles differ as much as their looks. Gorillas knuckle-walk, eat almost only plants and travel in troops led by a silverback. Orangutans are the most tree-dwelling great apes, are largely solitary, and eat mostly fruit. Arm length is a good cue: an orangutan's reach is longer than its body.

When you are looking at which

Gorilla

  • The animal is mostly black with a silver saddle, and you see it moving on its knuckles.
  • It lives in Africa, in a forest where several apes forage together.
  • A very heavy male, easily 300 pounds or more, dominates a troop.
  • You see mostly leaves and stems in its diet, not fruit.

Orangutan

  • The animal has long shaggy orange or reddish hair and a long reach in the trees.
  • It lives in Borneo or Sumatra and is high above ground, usually alone.
  • Adult males have cheek pads and a throat sac, found in the three orangutan species.
  • It builds a nest in the trees to sleep and is eating fruit.

How this works

The quiz asks about hair color, range, movement, group life and diet. Each answer favors the ape most associated with that cue, and the note under each question names both so you can see the reasoning, including which cues are weaker or overlap.

Photos of young or captive animals can be misleading, since young orangutans start bright orange and darken with age, and individual apes vary in color. Treat the result as a guide, and ask a zoo keeper or a primatologist if you have an unusual specimen.

Frequently asked questions

Which is bigger, a gorilla or an orangutan?

A gorilla. Male gorillas weigh about 300 to 400 pounds at San Diego Zoo, while male orangutans weigh about 170 to 220 pounds, while Wikipedia gives about 165 pounds for males.

Do gorillas and orangutans live in the same place?

No. Gorillas live in forests of Sub-Saharan Africa, and orangutans live only on the Southeast Asian islands of Borneo and Sumatra, so the two are never found together in the wild.

Why are orangutans called solitary?

Adult orangutans mostly travel alone, and the main long-term bond is between a mother and her young. Gorillas, in contrast, live in family troops of about 5 to 30.

Which has longer arms?

The orangutan has the longer reach. Its arms span over 7 feet from fingertip to fingertip, longer than its body, while gorillas have long arms for knuckle-walking.
