Water Buffalo vs Bison
Verdict: Look for a shoulder hump and shaggy coat. Bison have both and short, upward-curving horns, while water buffalo have a sloping back, sparse hair and wide, sweeping crescent horns.
Americans often call bison buffalo, which adds to the confusion. True buffalo, such as the water buffalo and the African Cape buffalo, are Old World animals. The American bison is a separate animal. This page compares the water buffalo, wild or domestic, with the American bison, the one you would see in Yellowstone or on a US ranch.
Their habits differ as much as their looks. The water buffalo lives in warm wetlands and spends much of its time wallowing, and it has long been domesticated for milk, meat and work. Bison are shaggy grassland animals built for cold prairie winters. The head shape and horns are reliable clues in side views.

How this works
The quiz uses cues you can see in a photo or at a distance: hump, horns, coat, setting and head shape. Each answer points to water buffalo or bison, and each cue line notes how strong the clue is, so weaker clues like setting count for less than hump and horns.
The comparison covers the American bison and the water buffalo. It does not cover the African Cape buffalo, the European bison or hybrids with cattle, which blur the cues. Domestic water buffalo also differ between swamp and river types, and horn shape varies with them.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between buffalo and bison?
True buffalo, such as the water buffalo and Cape buffalo, live in Asia and Africa. Bison live in North America and Europe. Bison have a large shoulder hump, shaggy coat and short horns, while buffalo do not have a hump.
Is the American buffalo a bison?
Yes. Early European explorers likely applied the name buffalo to the American bison, and the habit stuck. The accurate name for the animal is American bison.
Which is bigger, water buffalo or bison?
They overlap. Wild male water buffalo can reach about 1,200 kg, and domestic ones run 250 to 550 kg. Bison bulls reach about 2,000 pounds, which is around 900 kg. A large wild water buffalo bull may outweigh a bison bull.
Can I get close to bison in a park?
No. Bison can be aggressive, run up to about 35 mph and jump over objects about 5 feet high. Watch from a safe distance with binoculars and follow posted park rules.
