Crocodile vs Alligator
Verdict: a wide, U-shaped snout means alligator; a narrow, V-shaped snout with lower teeth showing means crocodile. Answer five quick cues below and the quiz names the one you saw.
Crocodile vs alligator side by side
| Trait | Alligator | Crocodile |
|---|---|---|
| Snout (from above) | Wide and rounded, U-shaped | Narrow and pointed, V-shaped |
| Teeth, mouth closed | Lower teeth mostly hidden | Lower teeth visible, a big fourth tooth shows |
| Color | Dark gray to nearly black | Lighter olive, tan or brown |
| Jaw widths | Upper jaw wider than lower | Both jaws about equal |
| Water | Mostly freshwater | Salt-tolerant, coastal and brackish water as well |
| Where in the U.S. | Southeast, from the Carolinas to Texas | Southern tip of Florida only |

When you are looking at which
If you are in a freshwater pond or swamp in Louisiana, Georgia or the Carolinas, you are almost certainly looking at an alligator. The wide snout is built for crushing turtles and other hard-shelled prey, and the broad upper jaw hides the lower teeth.
If you are in brackish water along the Florida coast, the Caribbean, Australia or Africa, crocodiles become likely. Their narrower snout and visible lower teeth give them a toothier, more tapered look, and many species handle salt water.
How this works
Each answer you pick points to one animal. The quiz counts the cues that match alligator and the cues that match crocodile, then reports whichever has more. A tie says so rather than guessing.
Snout shape and closed-mouth teeth are the cues biologists lean on first. Color depends on light, mud and age, and range only helps when you know the species can live there, so those count as supporting evidence.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- Smithsonian's National Zoo: American alligator, Alligator snout, hidden fourth tooth, freshwater habitat, little salt tolerance (checked October 2026)
- National Park Service (Everglades): American crocodile, Crocodile triangular snout, fourth lower tooth visible, coastal/brackish/salt habitat (checked October 2026)
- Florida FWC: American crocodile, Side-by-side crocodile vs alligator: snout, teeth, habitat, color (checked October 2026)
These are field-identification guides. Wild crocodilians are dangerous; follow local wildlife rules and stay back.
Frequently asked questions
Which is more dangerous, a crocodile or an alligator?
Wildlife agencies treat both as dangerous and advise keeping your distance. Large saltwater and Nile crocodiles are responsible for more recorded attacks worldwide than American alligators, which tend to avoid people unless fed or cornered. Never feed either one.
Where do alligators and crocodiles live in the same place?
South Florida is the best-known spot. American alligators live across the southeastern United States, while the American crocodile reaches the southern tip of Florida, so both can share the Everglades region.
Can you tell them apart from a photo?
Usually, if the head is visible. A U-shaped, broad snout means alligator and a narrow V-shaped snout means crocodile. Closed-mouth teeth are the second check. Color and size alone are not reliable because lighting and age change both.
