Tick vs Bed Bug

Verdict: Count the legs and note where it is: a tick has eight legs and stays attached to skin, usually picked up outdoors. A bed bug has six legs, feeds and leaves, and lives in bedding. Ticks can carry disease, bed bugs are not known to.

Tell-apart quiz

Ticks and bed bugs both feed on blood, both are small, and neither has wings, so a tiny bug on your skin is easy to misjudge. The quickest check is legs. A tick has eight legs, while a bed bug is an insect with six. Behavior helps too: a tick bites and stays attached while it feeds, and a bed bug feeds and retreats to its hiding place.

Where you found it is the other clue. Ticks come from tall grass and other tick habitat and rarely breed indoors. Bed bugs hitchhike on luggage and secondhand furniture, then breed rapidly in bedrooms. The health risk differs too, since ticks transmit pathogens and bed bugs are not known to spread disease.

When you are looking at which

Tick

  • It has eight legs and is attached to your skin, or you recently walked through grass or woods.
  • You find a single bug after hiking, gardening or handling a pet that was outdoors.
  • It stays put and keeps feeding until it is removed.
  • You develop fever, chills or a rash in the weeks after a bite.

Bed Bug

  • It has six legs, is flat and reddish-brown, and runs away rather than staying attached.
  • You find several in mattress seams, bed frames or headboards, or after a hotel stay.
  • Itchy red welts show up in the morning, some 1 to 14 days after the bite.
  • The problem repeats in the bedroom and gets worse over time.

How this works

The quiz covers five cues: leg count, whether the bug is attached to skin, where it was found, how many there are, and what it looks like. They come from public health and pest-management guidance on ticks and bed bugs.

It cannot replace a medical visit or a professional inspection. Many bites look alike, and some bugs, such as fleas and mites, are neither. If you are bitten by a tick or have a persistent indoor problem, contact a healthcare provider or a licensed pest professional.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell a tick from a bed bug?

Count the legs and check where you found it. A tick has eight legs and stays attached to the skin, while a bed bug has six legs and retreats after feeding. Ticks come from outdoors, bed bugs from bedding.

Do bed bugs carry disease?

The CDC says bed bugs are not known to spread diseases to people. Their bites can itch, and scratching can cause skin infections, and rare allergic reactions can occur.

Can a tick infest my house like bed bugs?

Not usually. Ticks rarely reproduce indoors, while bed bugs breed quickly in bedrooms and living spaces. A large indoor infestation points to bed bugs.

How big is a bed bug?

About 1 to 7 millimeters long, flat and reddish-brown with no wings. They can travel over 100 feet in a night but usually stay within 8 feet of where people sleep.
