Catfish vs Bullhead
Verdict: Check the tail first. A channel catfish has a deeply forked tail, while a bullhead has a square or rounded tail. Spots on the sides and a larger size also point to channel catfish.
People say catfish for the whole group, but anglers usually mean channel catfish when they compare it with a bullhead. Bullheads are also catfish in the scientific sense, and three species are common: black, yellow and brown. Blue and flathead catfish are other species and are not covered here.
The tail is the quickest clue and it works at a glance. Size helps too, since bullheads stay small and channel catfish can grow far larger. Habitat overlaps, so treat it as a hint only. Both have chin barbels, so that feature does not separate the two.

When you are looking at which
Catfish
- The tail has a deep fork like a swallow's tail.
- Scattered small black spots show along the sides of a younger fish.
- The fish is large, several pounds or more, from a river, reservoir or big lake.
- It lives in clear or flowing water rather than a muddy farm pond.
Bullhead
- The tail is square across the end or gently rounded, with no fork.
- The sides are plain with no spots, and the body looks short and stocky.
- The fish is small, under about 2 pounds and 18 inches.
- It came from a muddy, slow pond or creek with a soft bottom.
How this works
The quiz asks about features you can see on the fish in hand: tail shape, spotting, size, where it was caught and tail markings. Each answer points toward channel catfish or bullhead, and the cue under each question says how strong that clue is, so weak clues do not outweigh the tail.
Tail shape is the reliable cue. Size, spots and habitat overlap between fish, and blue and flathead catfish are not covered. If you need a species-level answer for regulations, check your state wildlife agency's fish identification guide or ask a local fisheries biologist.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- West Virginia DNR: Bullhead Catfish, Square tail, stocky body, habitat tolerance and record sizes of bullheads. (checked October 2026)
- Minnesota DNR: Species Profile, Bullheads, Bullhead species, rounded tail, spine, barbels and preferred waters. (checked October 2026)
- Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife: Catfish, Channel catfish forked tail, spots, size and comparison with bullheads. (checked October 2026)

Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between a bullhead and a catfish?
The tail. Channel catfish have a deeply forked tail, and bullheads have a square or rounded tail. Bullheads are also smaller and prefer quiet, murky water.
Are bullheads a kind of catfish?
Yes. Bullheads belong to the catfish family, and they have the chin whiskers that give catfish their name. In everyday fishing talk, though, catfish means channel, blue or flathead catfish and bullhead means the smaller species.
How big do bullheads get compared to channel catfish?
Bullheads seldom exceed about 2 pounds and 18 inches. West Virginia lists a state record bullhead of 6.1 pounds, and the world record is 8.02 pounds. Channel catfish in Oregon can approach 40 pounds.
Can both fish sting you?
Bullheads have a single sharp spine in the dorsal and pectoral fins that can puncture a careless hand. Handle any catfish with a firm grip behind the pectoral fins or use a tool, and check local advice for first aid.
